Come April, Clemson figures to have several players picked high in the NFL Draft. One mock draft included four Tigers going in the first round.
As a result, Clemson has drawn plenty of NFL Scouts to its games this season. While they have been there, though, those scouts haven’t solely been focusing on the likes of Clelin Ferrell, Christian Wilkins and Mitch Hyatt.
It’s been impossible not to notice Dexter Lawrence.
“Good luck not watching 90,” one scout told Bleacher Report’s Adam Kramer.
“He has the tools to be the next (Ndamukong) Suh. First-overall talent.”
Lawrence is only a sophomore, so he won’t be eligible to enter the NFL Draft until 2019. When he does, however, scouts expect him to me a strong contender to be picked No. 1 overall.
“What I’ve heard over and over again is that when scouts go into Clemson, they ask about Cain, Hyatt, Wilkins, and Ferrell, but the one guy they all want is Lawrence,” said Bleacher Report draft analyst Matt Miller. “The coaches say he’s a rare player and person, and scouts are eating it up.
“He’ll be my No. 1 player for next year’s draft barring some kind of injury.”
Lawrence has been limited by injuries for part of this season, so his numbers aren’t quite what you might expect from a future No. 1 overall pick. He has 28 tackles and just one sack on the season. However, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told Kramer that Lawrence extremely gifted athletically — Swinney said he’s “never seen a guy this size who moves like this.”
On top of that, Lawrence’s personality makes him a player teams can build a defensive unit around.
“He’s a Deshaun Watson at his position,” Swinney said. “Yes, he’s a great player, but what a young man.”
