At this point, the path to the College Football Playoff appears pretty straightforward for Clemson.
Continue to win, and they’re likely in.
Given that the Tigers are currently ranked No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings, meaning they would be in the field if the season ended today, and that they still have a likely ACC championship game against Miami on the schedule, Clemson’s resume should be good enough to warrant a Playoff berth with a 12-1 record.
How difficult will it be for Clemson to accomplish that? CBS Sports analyst Stephen Oh, who simulates the outcomes of every college football game, projected the likelihood that each team in the top 15 of the CFP rankings win their remaining regular season games.
Oh gives Clemson a 59.7 percent chance to do so. That’s the second-best chance of any team in the top 12. Only Alabama, with a 68.7 percent chance to win out, has the best chance, according to Oh.
Oh’s projections line up with Yahoo Sports analyst Pat Forde’s assertion that Clemson has the easiest remaining path to the Playoff of the remaining contenders.
The one catch is that Oh’s projection doesn’t include an ACC championship game, since neither the Tigers or Hurricanes have clinched their respective divisions yet.
At the very least, however, it appears more likely than not Clemson will enter the conference title game with only one loss and an opportunity to play its way into the Playoff.
