Clemson did what it needed to do against North Carolina State to retake the driver’s seat in the ACC Atlantic, and the Tigers can breathe a bit knowing they’ve won the game they absolutely had to.
ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit is a believer in the defending national champs.
“I think the best team, in my mind, if everybody is healthy, is Clemson. I think Clemson, if Kelly Bryant’s ankle is healthy, and it appears that it is. I know that they’re defense has given up some points here lately,” Herbstreit said. “It’s just my opinion that when the dust settles, I think Clemson’s going to potentially be the best team again this year in the entire country.”
Florida State was a game many probably had penciled in as a crucial contest at the start of the year, and rightfully so. Before Deondre Francois sustained a season-ending injury against Alabama in the season opener, the Seminoles looked every part the worthy challenger to Clemson’s defending division crown.
Instead, the Tigers are coming off their biggest game of the year and facing a down-on-their-luck team instead of the Seminoles, instead of the other way around. That doesn’t mean Florida State is a pushover, though. Far from it.
It’s a rivalry game, and Clemson has to win to clinch the division. Florida State is hanging on to its hopes of playing in a bowl game by a thread, but that can provide even more incentive. The chance to play spoiler to a rival’s season is an opportunity Florida State gladly will take, which is why Clemson can’t afford to let up.
“It’s going to be an environment where we’re at home,” Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant said Monday. “It’s good we get to play in front of our fans and have the opportunity to clinch it, but it’s going to be a rivalry game. Like I said, they are going to bring it despite whatever their record is. It’s going to be a hard-fought game.”
The Tigers have spoken a lot about entering a “championship phase” over the past week, and they proved it Saturday with a 38-31 win over North Carolina State. In that game, they had to overcome a handful of deficiencies to pull out a win.
Without Francois, Florida State has struggled against opponents they should have been expected to handle with ease. Losses to Alabama, N.C. State and Miami aren’t surprising losses, given the strength of each of those teams. But the Seminoles were blown out by Boston College, and they’ve eked out wins over Syracuse and Duke.
It’d be easy to assume Clemson will bulldoze Florida State and easily wrap up the division, but you can’t do that ― especially not in a rivalry game. The championship phase the Tigers say they’ve shifted into doesn’t allow any room for that to happen, and they’re doing whatever they can to ensure it won’t.
