For the second straight week, Clemson took advantage of missteps by the teams ahead of it in the College Football Playoff rankings.
The Tigers moved up two spots to No. 1 in this week’s batch of rankings, up from No. 3 a week ago. Clemson was behind Alabama and Miami, but each of those two teams were upset over the weekend.
Alabama lost to Auburn, and Miami slipped up the day after Thanksgiving by Pitt. But Clemson took care of South Carolina with ease in its 34-10 win, and because of that the Tigers were the obvious choice to take over the top spot.
Clemson’s last hurdle before the playoff field becomes final is against that same Miami team this week in the ACC Championship game. Win there, and the Tigers will return to the playoff for the third year in a row.
