As expected, Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables is a hot commodity on the head coaching carousel. The Tigers won last year’s national championship due in large part to the defense’s dominance throughout the season.
Rumors are swirling that Arkansas and Mississippi State, who both have vacancies, are interested in Venables. Is it reciprocated?
Here’s what Venables had to say on the matter:
“Well, because y’all bring it up, it’s annoying. I don’t hear about it otherwise on whatever’s out there because I just don’t spend any time focused on that and I’ve got a great job,” the 46-year-old said, per The Post and Courier. “Again, I’ve said that many, many times and I’m very thankful and grateful for that. We’re in a great position, so why would I be worried about what’s on the other side of the fence? I’ve always felt that way — and if people have interest, that’s part of it. You either decide to listen or not. Right now, we’ve got a tremendous opportunity this week playing for a championship and my loyalty is to here and our players.”
That’s not a yes or a no, but if you’re a Clemson fan, it’s tough to doubt Venables’ focus.
The Tigers have a huge ACC Championship showdown against Miami looming. They’ll need to play well defensively.
