DE Chase Young becomes third Ohio State freshman to lose black stripe

Defensive end Chase Young got the news all Ohio State freshmen wait for Wednesday, when coaches informed him he’d lost his black stripe, earning initiation as a Buckeye.

Young becomes the third Ohio State newcomer to lose his black stripe this summer, joining running back J.K. Dobbins and defensive back Isaiah Pryor.

The black stripe is a tradition Urban Meyer created early in his coaching career and has maintained ever since. A player loses his black stripe when coaches decide he is worthy of officially joining the team, based on how he has conducted himself on and off the field.

Young is one of the most talented players in Ohio State’s freshman class. He arrived in Columbus as a five-star recruit and the No. 6 overall player in the Class of 2017, according to 247Sports’ composite ranking.
