CBS Sports: Mike Gundy would have easier playoff path at Tennessee

The SEC is often touted as the toughest conference in the land, so when Mike Gundy chose to stay at Oklahoma State instead of jumping for Tennessee, it’d make sense to think he’d have an easier path to the playoffs.

But Barton Simmons of CBS Sports thinks otherwise. He wrote today that the Tennessee job provides a smooth path to the College Football Playoff, especially when compared to Oklahoma State.

“For Gundy and other coaches around the country, the path to the playoffs shouldn’t deter them from an SEC jump. In fact, the path looks significantly tougher to get out of his own conference — the Big 12,” Simmons wrote.

He characterized the Big 12 as a more balanced conference than the SEC. “The weekly grind is more taxing in the Big 12 than the SEC,” he wrote.

It’s doubtful that playoff paths were the first thing on Gundy’s mind when deciding whether to stay or go. But if he continues to be stymied in the Big 12 at Oklahoma State, he might start looking around for an easier route to a championship.
