CBS Sports has Florida, not Michigan, in New Year’s Six; new team joins CFP

Although Florida fans might be taking the loss to Michigan pretty hard, some in the media apparently don’t think too much about it.

The No. 17 Gators’ 33-17 loss to the No. 11 Wolverines on Saturday wasn’t crushing because of the opponent or even the score, rather it was the way Florida was comprehensively outclassed by the Big Ten power.

On Monday, CBS Sports released its updated bowl projections with the Gators in a New Year’s Six bowl. Jerry Palm has Florida facing South Florida in the Peach Bowl, while Michigan is nowhere to be found.

Palm doesn’t have an explanation for pegging Jim McElwain and Co. for that game in Atlanta, but he does have one explaining why Michigan isn’t projected in a New Year’s Six bowl.

He says that is based on the fact that Michigan has been to bowl games in the Sunshine State the last two seasons.

Palm writes:

“I am hearing from a lot of Michigan fans complaining that I am disrespecting the Wolverines by projecting them to the Holiday Bowl instead of something like the Citrus or Outback. (Others complain that I do not have them winning the  Super Bowl, but this explanation is not for them.) With the new bowl agreements three years ago, Big Ten bowl pairings outside of the CFP and New Year’s Six games are no longer based primarily on merit.  Instead, factors like how often and how recently a team has been to a particular game — or even a state or region — plays as big a role, if not a bigger one.”

On the other hand, the Gators’ arch rival, the Seminoles, definitely saw their CBS projection suffer as a result of their 24-7 loss to Alabama mixed with the loss of QB Deondre Francois.

“Our SportsLine experts now project Florida State to finish third in the division and fifth in the conference,” Palm writes. “I am not quite that pessimistic, but I have dropped FSU from the College Football Playoff projection.”

Taking Florida State’s place is defending national champion Clemson, which is seeking its third straight trip to the CFP.
