Tennessee athletic director John Currie has been fired, according to multiple reports out of Knoxville.

Currie has struggled to find a suitable head coach after firing Butch Jones in November. The Vols have cycled through one candidate after another, but haven’t been able to find a deal.

He was responsible for the Greg Schiano debacle, which could lead to the Vols being legally liable for breaking an agreement with the Ohio State defensive coordinator.

Tennessee has reportedly been in contact with and turned down by nearly a dozen coaches since firing Butch Jones. That list includes candidates like Jon GrudenGreg Schiano, David Cutcliffe and Mike Gundy. Dave Doeren, Jeff Brohm and Mike Leach. The Vols were also reportedly interested in Chip Kelly, Dan Mullen and SMU’s Chad Morris.

A day after meeting with Washington State coach Mike Leach, Tennessee’s search will march on.

Currie was hired by Tennessee on Feb. 28, 2017 after serving as Kansas State’s athletic director.
