Count Sports Illustrated among the publications predicting a College Football Playoff appearance for the Oklahoma Sooners.
After a madcap 62-52 win over rival Oklahoma State in Bedlam, Oklahoma has a good chance of moving up from their No. 5 ranking in the College Football Playoff. None of the teams above the Sooners lost, but none had as impressive of a win.
Sports Illustrated took that into consideration. The publication has Oklahoma in the Playoff, facing off against Georgia in the Rose Bowl. These projections “take into account predicted results for the final weeks of the regular season.” That means that when the dust settles, SI expects the Sooners to be one of four teams with a shot at a title. Alabama and Miami square off in the other semifinal in this scenario.
The Big 12 has two other teams in SI’s New Years Six bowl projections. TCU is predicted to play Washington in the Cotton Bowl. Oklahoma State is projected for a Fiesta Bowl berth against Wisconsin.
Oklahoma still has a few mountains to climb to get to the Playoff, beginning with a titanic clash this week against No. 8 TCU. But if they can win that game, and go on to win the Big 12, don’t be surprised if the Sooners are making their second-ever CFP appearance at the end of the season.
