Big Ten basketball readying for 20-game conference schedule, per report

The Big Ten basketball season could be getting even longer.

The conference is “preparing” for a jump to a 20-game league schedule, according to Jon Rothstein of FanRag Sports. Big Ten teams currently play an 18-game conference schedule.

Rothstein reported that the Big Ten schedule could expand to 20 games for the 2018-19 season. Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said he thought the league was heading toward a 20-game schedule earlier this year.

“I personally see us going to a 20-game schedule,” the Michigan State coach said to ESPN. “I don’t think there’s any question it’s going to happen — and I’m not overly against it.”

The conference is reportedly adding league games in December for the upcoming season to accommodate the Big Ten Tournament, which is being held earlier than usual in Madison Square Garden. It’s unclear how the addition of two extra league games would change the start date for league play.
