Big 12 Championship Game 2017: Date, time, TV schedule for Oklahoma-TCU

Oklahoma and TCU meet Saturday, December 2, 2017, for the Big 12 Championship Game.

The Sooners won the teams’ regular-season meeting, beating TCU, 38-20, on Nov. 11 in Norman, Okla. Oklahoma has won the previous three matchups in the series and five of the past six. The Sooners enter Saturday’s title game in position for a spot in the College Football Playoff. At 11-1, Oklahoma needs only a victory to remain in the committee’s top four.

TCU, meanwhile, is a longshot to reach the playoff thanks to its two losses. But a conference championship would give the Horned Frogs an 11-2 record and a place in a New Year’s Six bowl game. A loss could bump down TCU come bowl-selection time.

Big 12 Championship Game  preview, keys to the game

Here are three key questions entering the matchup.

1. Will TCU be able to slow Baker Mayfield?

To this point, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is a clear frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy. Last time he faced TCU, Mayfield threw for 333 yards and three touchdowns with 50 rushing yards on 11 carries. Stopping Mayfield will likely prove impossible for TCU, but limiting him is within reason. The Horned Frogs have the eighth-best scoring defense in the FBS and have also held each of their opponents below their season scoring averages. Getting a second shot at Mayfield should surely benefit TCU, given it will be more prepared for what it’s up against. If Mayfield has his way with the Frogs’ defense, it’s hard to imagine the Sooners won’t secure their place in the College Football Playoff.

2. Will Rodney Anderson keep running wild?

For the past month and a half, Oklahoma’s Rodney Anderson has been among the best running backs in the nation. He has five 100-yard performances in his past six games. That includes against TCU, when he posted 300 total yards, scoring a pair of both rushing and receiving touchdowns en route to Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. The Horned Frogs have the No. 2 rushing defense in the nation at 90 yards allowed per game, behind only undefeated Wisconsin’s 80.5. Anderson’s 151 rushing yards blew TCU’s average away; in fact, he arguably did more damage than Mayfield. If the Horned Frogs can limit the Oklahoma’s ground game, it should also improve their chances against Mayfield’s arm. But if the Sooners have both prongs of their offense working effectively, the conference title could easily be theirs.

3. Will TCU be able to keep up?

Oklahoma is going to score plenty, scoring at 29 points each game and surpassing 40 eight times. The question then becomes whether TCU’s offense can score enough to keep up. The Horned Frogs are 10-0 when scoring more than 20 points, but both of their losses came when they were held at or below that mark. The Sooners’ secondary, which has been questioned throughout the season, performed well against TCU last time out, holding quarterback Kenny Hill to a season-low 46.4 completion percentage. Hill reportedly suffered a concussion during the game and missed the following’s weeks matchup with Texas. He returned against Baylor and was responsible for four touchdowns while throwing for 325 yards. However, Darius Anderson, TCU’s leading rusher, suffered a season-ending injury in the loss to Oklahoma and won’t be available in the championship game. Kyle Hicks, who rushed for 38 yards on 10 carries against the Sooners, will need to step up to support Hill if the Horned Frogs are going to have a chance to outgun the Sooners.
