Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett, Penn State running back Saquon Barkley and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor were named the three finalists for the Silver Football, an award handed out annually by the Chicago Tribune to the Big Ten’s top player.
Barrett and Barkley split the honor in 2016, and the 2017 winner will be announced next week.
All three candidates can make compelling cases.
Barrett was the quarterback of the Big Ten East champs, throwing for 2,728 yards to go with 33 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions. Barrett also ran for a total of 672 yards in 12 games as Ohio State went 10-2.
Barkley, meanwhile, was the Heisman front-runner for two months before his production dipped in November. Penn State’s star junior still wound up with 1,134 rushing yards, 594 receiving yards and was accountable for 22 total touchdowns (16 rushing, 3 receiving, 2 kick returning and 1 passing).
As a freshman, Taylor put up eye-popping numbers for the No. 4 Badgers. He finished third in the nation with 1,806 rushing yards in 12 games, scored 13 rushing touchdowns and averaged 7.0 yards per carry.
Barrett and Taylor will be on opposing sides of Saturday’s Big Ten title game at Lucas Oil Stadium, while Barkley is hoping for an invite to the Heisman Trophy ceremony on Dec. 9 in New York.
