R.J. Barrett, nation’s No. 1 recruit, commits to Duke over Oregon, Kentucky

R.J. Barrett, the consensus No. 1-ranked recruit in the 2018 class, was trending to Duke in recent weeks, according to multiple recruiting sites.

Turns out, they were right with their prediction.

Barrett, a 6-foot-6 small forward from Monteverde, Florida, visited Eugene back in September and had the Ducks among his final three. But the Canadian spurned Oregon and picked the Blue Devils over the Ducks and Kentucky.

Barrett made the announcement on TSN Sportscentre on Friday evening.

Barrett reclassified to the 2018 class in July and released a top 5, which included Arizona and Michigan, in August. Dana Altman and members of the Oregon staff flew to Florida in early October to pay Barrett a visit.

Oregon’s Canada connection — including Dillion Brooks and Chris Boucher — wasn’t enough to sway Barrett.

The 17-year-old attends Monteverde Academy, the same private school that Ben Simmons attended before going No. 1 overall in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Even without Barrett, the Ducks have a stellar 2018 recruiting class. It includes 5-star recruit Louis King, [5-star center Bol Bol] and 4-star recruit Miles Norris.
