Welcome to the Thursday edition of our Oklahoma DieHards morning roundup, where we take you through all the biggest headlines around Oklahoma athletics.

Baker Mayfield earning recognition

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is a finalist for the Walter Camp National Player of the Year. He’s one of five finalists, along with Saquon Barkley, Lamar Jackson, Bryce Love and Rashaad Penny.

Mayfield is also one of three finalists for the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the best quarterback in the country. Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph and Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett are also finalists.

Big 12 title pedigree

Oklahoma has played its best football when the Big 12 championship is on the line. DieHards reporter John Shinn went through the numbers, and the Sooners are 7-1 in conference championship games.

Of course, the Sooners need to beat No. 11 TCU on Saturday to earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. Oklahoma is in a great position to do that.

Other headlines from around the program

  • Oklahoma plays TCU in the Big 12 championship game Saturday. SB Nation’s Bill Connelly’s metrics project the Sooners to narrowly beat TCU in the matchup.
  • Finalists for the Joe Moore Award were named on Wednesday, and the Sooners were not in the running for best offensive line. Mayfield took to Twitter to criticize the snub.
  • CBS Sports writer Dennis Dodd believes the Big 12 Championship Game could be coming at the worst time for Oklahoma.

NCAA still involved in Amani Bledsoe case

Defensive lineman Amani Bledsoe is suing the NCAA for a lost year of eligibility after he tested positive for a banned substance in a protein powder. The NCAA motioned to deny, but a judge blocked the decision.

Bledsoe’s case balances on the fact he did not know the powder had clomiphene because it wasn’t on the ingredient label. However, the NCAA is arguing that not knowing shouldn’t play into the decision. Bledsoe believes the NCAA – as a state actor – infringed on his rights by denying him the right to play football.

Other headlines around the program:

  • Oklahoma men’s basketball takes on North Texas at 7 p.m. CT Thursday in Norman, Okla. This is the first home game for the team in about two weeks.
  • Former Oklahoma defensive back Ahmad Thomas officially signed with the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday.
