Baker Mayfield continues to move up in the latest 2018 NFL mock drafts.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer had Mayfield going No. 27 overall to the New Orleans Saints in his mock draft on Tuesday. He also had Oklahoma offensive tackle Orlando Brown at No. 19 to the Atlanta Falcons.
Mayfield has generated heat with scouts over the last month. I think he could go Top 15. Or he could go in the third round, which is to say he’s polarizing. But how much fun would he be in Sean Payton’s system?
According to Breer, Mayfield’s stellar season appears to be drawing the attention of NFL scouts. The senior quarterback has completed 71.7 percent of his passes for 3,226 yards, 28 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. In New Orleans, he would have the chance to sit and learn behind Super Bowl champion Drew Brees, who may be nearing the end of his career at 38.
There still isn’t consensus on the Mayfield’s NFL potential. ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay has said he projects as a “career backup.” Fellow ESPN analyst Mel Kiper, meanwhile, last projected Mayfield as a second-round pick. For what it’s worth, former Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick said Mayfield will be “great” at the next level.
Analysts have more agreement on Brown, a consensus first-rounder by most accounts.
From Breer on why Atlanta would be a good fit:
[Left tackle] Jake Matthews will be entering a contract year in 2018, and the Falcons’ O-line needs some work in general.
The 2018 NFL Draft is scheduled for April 26-28. It will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
