Baker Mayfield named finalist for Davey O’Brien Award

Baker Mayfield is going to come home with some hardware from someone.

He was most recently named a finalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the nation’s top quarterback.

Mayfield has thrown for 4,097 yards and 37 touchdowns with only five interceptions this season. He’s hit on 247 of 346 passes, good for a completion percentage of 71.4. Those numbers alone would get him in the running for this trophy, but his intangibles and the winning the Sooners are doing mean he’s likely the frontrunner.

Rudolph and Barrett are good quarterbacks, but no one has defined their team quite like Mayfield has, and no one has bolstered them through tough times. It’s hard to imagine the Sooners being anywhere close to where they are now without Mayfield, and that thought process is what has him as the favorite for the Heisman Trophy. With any luck, he’ll pick up the Davey O’Brien along the way as well.
