Baker Mayfield put the nation on notice on Saturday in Bedlam.

In a high-stakes ranked showdown with College Football Playoff and Big 12 title implications on the line, Mayfield put forth arguably his best performance as a Sooner. In what ultimately became a 62-52 shootout victory over Oklahoma State, Mayfield completed 24 of 36 passes for a a record-setting 598 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Now on the heels of his video game-esque effort, Mayfield is surging up Heisman Watch lists, and along with topping ESPN’s, Mayfield now headlines Yahoo! Sports Heisman Watch list, ranking about Stanford’s Bryce Love and Penn State’s Saquon Barkley.

Mayfield is now second in the country with 3,226 passing yards and first with a sterling 71.7 completion percentage,” Sam Cooper of Yahoo! Sports said. “He set an FBS record for quarterback rating in 2016 (196.4). Through nine games in 2017, Mayfield’s QB rating is 201.6. He’s having a special season.

Furthermore, along with Mayfield’s quarterback rating of 201.6 leading the entire nation after he set the record as a junior, Mayfield’s completion percentage (71.7%) is the best in college football and his 28 touchdown passes are tied for third nationally.

And of course, his Sooners are 8-1 with two double-digit wins over ranked foes and currently enjoy a No. 5 ranking in the College Football Playoff poll. Mayfield has had a significant say in such success, and not surprisingly.

He’s quite arguably the best player in college football this season and thus, Mayfield is now headlining Heisman leaderboards.

Mayfield and the Sooners will be tested on Saturday, though, as No. 6 TCU will present the best defense Oklahoma has faced this season.
