Baker Mayfield amazingly wasn’t unanimous All-Big 12 selection

Baker Mayfield earned a boatload of awards Thursday when the Big 12 Conference announced its awards.

But the most stunning announcement was obvious when the All-Big 12 teams were closely perused. Mayfield was not a unanimous All-Big 12 selection.

The Big 12 has some of the best quarterbacks in the nation. Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph three for more passing yards than Mayfield. And West Virginia’s Will Grier was on place to keep up with Mayfield in touchdown passes before breaking his finger early in his next-to-last game of the season.

But it’s  hard to argue with Mayfield’s production in a season for the ages that earned him the third All-Big 12 quarterback selection of his career.

Among the unanimous All-Big 12 team picks this season included Oklahoma State wide receiver James Washington, Texas safety DeShon Elliott, Oklahoma tackle Orlando Brown and Oklahoma tight end Mark Andrews.

Mayfield was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year for the second time in his career, after earlier winning it in 2015. He joins former Oklahoma quarterback Jason White (2003, ’04), Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch (1999, ’01) and Texas quarterback Ricky Williams (1997, ’98) as the only players to win the honor twice in a career. All of them won the Heisman Trophy in their careers.

Mayfield leads the FBS in completion percentage (.714), passing efficiency rating (203.3), yards per pass attempt (11.8), yards per completion (16.6) and pass of plays of 20-plus yards (72), while ranking second in passing touchdowns (37) and passing yards per game (341.4) and third in total offense per game (361.8).

He’s completed 247-of-346 passes in 2017 with 37 touchdowns and 5 touchdowns. During this s season, Mayfield has thrown for a career-high 4,097 yards and rushed for 245 yards and another five scores.

Those numbers are hard  to argue with.

But at least one coach thought there was  a better  quarterback in the Big 12 this season.
