Auburn football: Senior Bowl watch list, Tigers’ SEC basketball schedule and volleyball season opener

Auburn-Auburn football

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers’ sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Special seniors

Upperclassmen know the routine, especially after four or five seasons in a college football program.

But if a senior is truly a special athlete, he might be chosen to play in the Senior Bowl at the end of the season. Already, Auburn has a number of players under consideration for that honor as six seniors have been named to the preseason watch list.

It’s a special group of seniors that’s leading Auburn into the 2017-18 season.

In other Auburn football news:

SEC basketball schedule released

Auburn basketball will play nine conference games at Auburn Arena this season, so plan accordingly.

That will include a Valentine’s Day date with Kentucky and a matchup with rival Alabama shortly thereafter.

Is there a more romantic way to spend your February? Probably not.

Bump, set, spike

Auburn fans are finally days away from the beginning of football season, but until the Tigers take on Georgia Southern on Sept. 2, there’s volleyball to watch.

Rick Nold’s team opens the 2017 season at the Hyatt Regency Invitational in Atlanta. It’s a two-day tournament hosted by Georgia Tech. Participants include No. 17 Michigan State and Furman.

The Tigers play Friday at 5 p.m. CT and you can find it on the ACC Network Extra/WatchESPN.

Tweet of the day

The Carolina Panthers squeaked by the Jacksonville Jaguars, 24-23, with the help of two former Tigers on Thursday in an NFL preseason game.

The first, of course, was Cam Newton, who threw just 2 passes but managed to turn one of them into a touchdown.

The other was former Auburn running back Cameron Artis-Payne. CAP, as he’s affectionately known by many, totaled 37 yards and scored 2 touchdowns in the win. And was feeling pretty good about it by all indications.
