Auburn football: 9 players stand out to SEC coaches, former Tigers in the pros

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers’ sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

9 preseason standouts

It’s one thing when the media thinks highly of a player, but it’s another when coaches expect big things from athletes.

Kicker Daniel Carlson seems to be the first to get a nod from media and coaches across the country. He and Braden Smith landed on the All-SEC first team, but they weren’t the only ones to get attention.

There are nine days left until the Tigers take the field and Auburn had nine land on the preseason coaches list, which was third-most in the conference. Here’s the breakdown after the senior power duo:

Second team

  • Kamryn Pettway (RB), Marlon Davidson (DE), Dontavius Russell (DT), Tre’ Williams (LB), Carlton Davis (CB), Tray Matthews (S)

Third team

  • Kerryon Johnson (RB)

Back to the NFL grind

After four seasons with the Tennessee Titans and four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Sen’Derrick Marks will see if the West Coast is the best coast.

The former Auburn defensive lineman was picked up by the San Francisco 49ers on Wednesday. Marks, who was drafted in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft played in 16 games last season for the Jags.

Making the jump across the pond

Brandy Montgomery is pumped — and with good reason.

The former Auburn basketball standout isn’t done on the hardwood. She’ll travel to Romania to join BC Univ Goldis ICIM Arad. For those that didn’t ace geography, that means she’ll be near the border of Hungary.

The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native averaged 13.3 points as a senior last season while leading the team in free-throw percentage (83.6).

Montgomery is the second 2017 graduate to embark on a pro career in Europe. Katie Frerking signed with Swedish club Lulea Basket in July.
