Auburn football: Almost that time, soccer splits, volleyball prepares for home opener

Auburn football-Tigers opener-qb Jarrett Stidham

Auburn football is the No. 1 topic in the War Eagle Wakeup every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across the Tigers’ sports world. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Auburn football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Almost that time

When Jarrett Stidham walked into a Sunday night press conference the Auburn quarterback wasn’t lacking any pep in his step.

“Ugh, finally,” Stidham said when asked how good it felt to officially be in a game week. It’s been a long time for the former Baylor QB, but it’s also been too long for fans.

Don’t worry, though. You can reiterate Stidham’s sounds in the next few days. It’s finally game week for Auburn football.

Gatewood takes center stage

Auburn commit Joey Gatewood played in a pretty big game last weekend and seemed to enjoy performing on a national stage.

Gatewood’s Bartram Trail team played Cartersville High School in Georgia on Saturday night and the game was televised on ESPN2. If you missed it, don’t worry, you can catch all the highlights by clicking on the Tweet below.

Soccer splits

Auburn soccer suffered a tough loss at Clemson in South Carolina on Friday night, falling 2-1 in double overtime.

Bri Folds scored her first goal of the season and Kristen Dodson led the way with three of Auburn’s eight shots. Meanwhile Sarah Le Beau matched a season high with three saves.

The Tigers rebounded with a 2-0 win over North Dakota on Sunday night. Both goals were scored by Dodson.

Auburn (2-1-1) will be in Durham on Friday to play North Carolina at 4 p.m. CT.

Volleyball pulls out a broom to start 2017

Auburn volleyball started its season winning 2 of 3 matches at the Hyatt Regency Invitational in Atlanta last weekend.

The Tigers swept host Georgia Tech on Friday (25-18, 25-13, 25-18) and coach Rick Nold was pleased with the “aggressive” play.

Junior Brenna McIlroy started the year with 12 kills on 23 attempts, senior Macy Reece added 8 kills, sophomore Gwyn Jones recorded 7 and freshman middle blocker Anna Stevenson tallied 6 kills in her debut.

On Saturday Auburn fell 3-0 to No. 17 Michigan State but finished up with a 3-1 win over Furman.

Auburn opens its home schedule Tuesday when it hosts Alabama State in Auburn Arena at 7 p.m. CT.

Tweet of the weekend

Auburn’s No. 1 quarterback expressed his eagerness to get back on the field.

Jarrett Stidham knows exactly how long he’s been off the field. He told reporters earlier this fall an exact count. He’s had Sept. 2 circled on the calendar for over a year.

Think the Texas native is ready to run through the tunnel for real in Jordan-Hare?
