Arkansas OL target Jahmir Johnson will make official visit next week

Welcome to SEC Country’s  daily Arkansas Razorbacks recruiting notebook . In this edition, we discuss an upcoming official visitor, the basketball signing class and more.

Arkansas to host Jahmir Johnson for Mississippi State game

Arkansas offensive line target Jahmir Johnson is set to make an official visit to Arkansas Nov. 17-19, according to a report from 247Sports.

Johnson is a 6-foot-6, 290-pound tackle from Arizona Western. He was expected to visit the Razorbacks the weekend of the Missouri game (Nov. 24-26) and Tennessee the following week. Both those visits were moved up a week because Arizona Western is likely to play in a bowl game the first weekend of December.

The 247Sports report states Johnson is not planning to sign until February. Therefore, he’ll have time to visit other schools before making a decision. Maryland, Rutgers and Southern Cal are currently among the most likely possibilities to receive an official visit, along with Arkansas and Tennessee.

Johnson has some ties to the Razorbacks’ program. He attended Imhotep Institute Charter High School in Philadelphia, the same school as Arkansas senior running back David Williams.

Additionally, Arkansas has had previous success recruiting from coach Tom Minnick’s program at Arizona Western. Junior tight end Jeremy Patton played for the Matadors the previous two seasons, as did former Arkansas wide receiver Cody Hollister before he signed with the Hogs.

Johnson spent last season at Rhode Island, redshirting at the FCS school. He could sign with one of the interested FBS programs and have three years to play his three remaining seasons of eligibility.

Arkansas hoops expected to sign 6 on Wednesday

The Arkansas men’s basketball program is expected to officially sign six 2018 commits Wednesday, the first day of the week-long early signing period. All six are expected to have signed a National Letter of Intent by 4 p.m. CT.

Arkansas’ class ranks No. 20 nationally and No. 2 in the SEC,  according to the 247Sports composite.

Another signing period for basketball begins April 11. The Hogs are not expected to sign any players during that period.

Here’s the full list of projected signees Wednesday:

  • Reggie Chaney, 4-star F, Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.)
  • Keyshawn Embery, 4-star G, IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)
  • Ethan Henderson, 3-star F, Parkview (Little Rock, Ark.)
  • Isaiah Joe, 3-star G, Northside (Fort Smith, Ark.)
  • Jordan Phillips, 3-star F, Cedar Hill (Texas)
  • Desi Sills, 3-star G, Jonesboro (Ark.)

Report: Arizona State, Kentucky favorites for DL Emmit Gooden

Former Arkansas commit Emmit Gooden could head to Arizona State or Kentucky, according to a report from Cats Illustrated.

The report also states the 3-star defensive tackle from Independence (Kan.) Community College is expected to officially visit Arizona State later this month. Gooden did not mention the Razorbacks in the 15-question report. He did, however, point to coaching stability as an important part of his decision-making process.

“I mean, that’s huge,” Gooden said. “When I was first getting recruited by Kentucky, the coaches recruiting me had been there at least a couple of years. They weren’t bouncing from school to school. It goes to show the staff is kind of stable and they like the [coaches] they bring in.”

SEC Country reported last week Gooden was no longer on Arkansas’ 2018 commitment list.
