Arkansas’ success against LSU hasn’t exactly come to halt under Bret Bielema

Arkansas football rules the world of Razorbacks sports. So, with your bacon, have some Hogs for Breakfast and get caught up. It’s SEC Country’s weekday column and roundup on all things Arkansas … especially Arkansas football. Opinion, numbers, inane babble and more! And now with ironic exclamation points! There is no place like it on the web.

Bret Bielema has been surprisingly good against LSU

When Bret Bielema arrived at Arkansas from Wisconsin, the knock against him was his struggles against the best teams in the Big Ten. Since coming to Fayetteville, that has actually been far less an issue in the SEC.

Take Bielema’s Arkansas teams’ showing against LSU. The Tigers won the first meeting in 2013, a season in which the Razorbacks didn’t win a single SEC game in a rebuilding year coming off the John L. Smith era. Yet even in that one, Arkansas lost to the 15th-ranked team in the nation by just four points, 31-27.

In 2014, Razorbacks fans rushed Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium field after Bielema and the Hogs collected their first SEC win in more than two years. LSU was the victim, 17-0.

The next year Arkansas went down to Death Valley and absolutely handled an LSU team that was ranked ninth in the country, 31-14.

Then there was last year. The outlier. LSU smashed Arkansas, 38-10. To some, that was the first blow in the Razorbacks’ subsequent fall from grace. Arkansas gets a chance to make things right, or return them back to normal, at least, on Saturday.

Weirder things have happened. Just look at the recent history.

LSU tamer in the day

You ever seen a game from LSU in the day time? They’re pretty rare. I can’t think, off the top of my head, of any one that stands out. I’m sure I’ve seen one, but I don’t recall it.

But that’s what Arkansas and the Tigers will undertake Saturday. Not just a day game, but a morning game. Hogs and LSU kickoff at 11 a.m. CT.

To fans, it’s not the most exciting part of the day. To some players, lots of coaches and nearly all of us in the media, morning kicks are grand. At LSU, aptly nicknamed Death Valley, night games are mighty intimidating. The stadium is one of the largest in the country and accordingly loud. Night games tend to have more raucous (read: more drunk) crowds.

Perhaps that helps Arkansas. Almost no one is giving the Razorbacks much of a chance this weekend, but it’s the Battle for the Boot. Worse Arkansas teams have beaten better LSU teams before.

Arkansas signs its Magnificent Sev…er, Six

Razorbacks basketball received a massive lift Wednesday as six Class of 2018 recruits signed National Letters of Intent to play hoops at Arkansas.

A pair of 4-star recruits — forward Ethan Henderson and guard Keyshawn Embery — signed along with four 3-star players.

Guards Isaiah Joe, Jordan Phillips and Desi Sills, and forward Reggie Chaney join Henderson and Embery to make of the class. All but Sills are ranked in the top 170 in the country in the 247Sports composite.

Arkansas opens its 2017-18 season Friday against Samford. The Razorbacks will lose six seniors after the season, including potential All-SEC guards Jaylen Barford and Daryl Macon.

Tweets and the like

Said this for years. Shouldn’t have needed to look back on it 10 years later. People should have appreciated it then. Instead, the freak-out and the cell phone and Gus Malzahn and grandparents and everything else.

Arkansas football picked up an offensive lineman recruit Wednesday. All is well! All is well!

Arkansas athletes are graduating at a pretty decent clip. That’s a good thing, regardless of on-field, on-court production.

Skip Breakfast? C’mon. It’s too important. Catch up with previous versions here.
