The Arkansas men’s basketball team gets another opportunity to make some national noise Sunday afternoon when it plays Connecticut in the third-place game at the PK80 Invitational in Portland, Ore.
Like Arkansas’ previous opponent in the Nike tournament, UConn brings back memories of the Hogs’ glory years. The two were powerhouses of mid-1990s college basketball. Yet, this is only their fourth-ever meeting. UConn leads the series 3-0 and won the last time the two teams played in 2011.
Flash-forward to 2017 and both are similar yet again. Arkansas and Connecticut both think they were underrated by media projections in their respective conferences. The Razorbacks were tabbed to finish middle of the SEC pack and UConn was picked fifth in the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies finished tied for fifth last season and posted a 16-17 overall record. It was the first time UConn finished with a losing record since 1986-87, Jim Calhoun’s first year.
Connecticut beat Oregon in the quarterfinals of this tournament and lost to Michigan State in the semis to ultimately land at Arkansas’ feet. The loss to the Spartans was UConn’s first of the season.
Arkansas is a 4 1/2-point favorite coming off a 19-point loss to North Carolina in its semifinal. ESPN’s Basketball Power Index predicts the Razorbacks have a 77 percent chance to win the game.
