FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Players, no matter the sport, are careful to tell media members and the public they don’t circle games on the calendar. They all count for the same.
The second sentence is right, anyway.
Arkansas and its opponent Tuesday night, Missouri State, have built quite the rivalry over the last three seasons. Players won’t cop to it. Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn denies it, too. It isn’t a rivalry built on emotion, necessarily, though. The rivalry is built on stakes. Three years ago, Arkansas won Game 3 of a Super Regional to go to the College World Series and eliminate the Bears. Last year, Missouri State won a win-or-go-home game at Baum Stadium to advance to Super Regionals.
Now, the two get an opportunity to play for lesser stakes, but with plenty of electricity.
Can’t be helped. The game doesn’t, really, mean much for the Razorbacks. They could lose it and still be completely fine. They are the No. 3 team in the country and are in line to host in the NCAA Tournament until they are knocked out of it. The Hogs are in first place in the SEC West. A Tuesday night nonconference game isn’t going to hurt.
Missouri State is good, too, but not on Arkansas’ level. The Bears are a borderline Top 25 team. Depends on the poll. Beating Arkansas in Fayetteville would be a feather in the cap, just in case the Bears fall in the final five weeks of the regular season. Would help get them to a No. 2 seed instead of a No. 3 seed when the tournament rolls around.
Baum Stadium should be rocking. Rather, it should be rocking considering the day of the week. Let’s just all hope we aren’t there until 3 a.m. again.

Who is calling the Arkansas game?
Phil Elson and Bubba Carpenter will provide the radio broadcasts on the Razorback Sports Network on IMG for radio, per usual.
The Razorbacks will head back to Mississippi for the weekend. Arkansas’ first trip down there yielded a series loss to Ole Miss. This one is to the home of the Bulldogs. Mississippi State is tied for last in the entire SEC.
