A year ago, few people would’ve been high on Will Muschamp and South Carolina. But that’s not the case this year.
A season after the Gamecocks were pegged to finish last in the SEC East, Muschamp and Co. went 6-7 in his first season, a drastic step up over the 3-9 team he inherited. Fans are buzzing about quarterback Jake Bentley along with his talented offensive playmakers, Deebo Samuel and Hayden Hurst.
“I’m really excited about our future. It’s great to be back,” Muschamp said at SEC Media Days.
And fans seem to think highly of Muschamp, as he has fared well in the SEC Country approval ratings poll. In the poll’s previous installment, Muschamp came in at 87.1 percent. That ranked fourth among SEC coaches and just behind Mark Stoops for best mark in the SEC East.
As for the recruiting trail, Muschamp, who reportedly was paid $3 million in 2016, continues to show he can recruit with the best of them. The Gamecocks have the No. 7 recruiting class among SEC teams. South Carolina continues to trend up for blue-chip prospects such as Channing Tindall and Jaycee Horn. The Gamecocks have secured a commitments from 4-star prospects Dakereon Joyner and Marlon Character Jr.
The Gamecocks open the 2017 season on Sept. 2 against North Carolina State in Charlotte, N.C. The Gamecocks announced Friday their first home game of the year, against Kentucky, will be a blackout.
Vote on Will Muschamp’s approval rating
The SEC Country approval rating poll is designed to give an indication of fan happiness over a period of time.
Our formula is based on the percentage of respondents that select each answer. We multiply that percentage by the following factors: 1 (strongly approve), 0.67 (approve), 0.33 (disapprove) and 0.0 (strongly disapprove). In other words, if 50 percent of respondents select “strongly approve” and 50 percent select “approve,” the formula would be (50 x 1) + (50 x 0.67) = 83.5% approval rating.
