J.D. Spielman got his college career — and Nebraska’s 2017 season — started off on an electrifying note Saturday night when he returned a kick off 99 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter against Arkansas State.

Spielman, a redshirt freshman receiver, made a big splash in the return game. It was reminiscent of an early career play for one of the best offensive players in Nebraska’s recent history.

In 2011, Ameer Abdullah began his Huskers’ career with a 100-yard kick off return touchdown against Fresno State.

Sunday, Abdullah welcomed Spielman to their exclusive club. The Detroit Lions running back tweeted at Spielman, welcoming him to the “my first career college Touchdown was a Kick Off Return Club” and joked his “membership should arrive shortly.”

Spielman — who had 2 catches for 44 yards in the victory — was glad to get the message.

Nebraska fans will hope Spielman’s career turns out to be as productive as Abdullah’s.
