Alabama-Mississippi State: Recap, score for Week 11 game (11/11/2017)


Alabama outlasted Mississippi State and won its toughest test of the season with a 31-24 victory in Starkville on Saturday night.

Jalen Hurts led a final-minute touchdown drive, culminating with a 26-yard catch-and-run TD to Devonta Smith with 25 seconds left in the game.

With the win, Alabama is expected to move into the No. 1 position in the College Football Playoff rankings when they’re released Tuesday night. Top-ranked Georgia lost to Auburn, clearing the way for the Crimson Tide (10-0) to move up one spot.

Following the matchup at Mississippi State, Alabama hosts Mercer and plays at Auburn in the Iron Bowl to close out the season. The Iron Bowl winner will play Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 2 in Atlanta.

  • Alabama 31, Mississippi 24 (4Q, 0:25): After a 31-yard pass from Jalen Hurts to Calvin Ridley, Hurts hits freshman DeVonta Smith for a 26-yard score and now the Tide need to keep MSU out of the end zone for the final 25 seconds.
  • Alabama gets the ball back with 1:09 left on its 32 with two timeouts remaining.
  • Alabama 24, Mississippi State 24 (4Q, 2:50): Andy Pappanastos’ 41-yard field goal ricochets off the upright and the game remains tied as the Bulldogs take over.
  • Mississippi State kicker Jace Christmann added a 25-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs a 24-17 lead.

THIRD QUARTER: Mississippi State 21, Alabama 17

  • Mississippi State’s offense kept grinding away, slowly wearing Alabama’s defense down. Midway through the third quarter, quarterback Nick Fitzgerald juked one Alabama defender and ran through another for a 2-yard touchdown.
  • Alabama threatened to score a touchdown following a long run by Damien Harris, but the Crimson Tide’s offense stalled. Kicker Andy Pappanastos added a 30-yard field goal.

SECOND QUARTER: Alabama 14, Mississippi State 14

  • Mississippi State kept attacking Alabama with its ground game. Running back Aeris Williams added a 5-yard rushing touchdown to give the Bulldogs the lead again.
  • As they did before, Alabama responded, this time with running back Josh Jacobs scoring a 1-yard touchdown. The score capped another 5-play, 75-yard drive.

FIRST QUARTER: Alabama 7, Mississippi State 7

  • Mississippi State opened the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run from running back Aeris Williams.
  • Alabama quickly responded as Jalen Hurts trotted in for a one-yard touchdown to cap 5-play, 75-yard drive to tie things up.
