TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Thursday was a day that a lot of University of Alabama football players had been looking forward to, and not just because the team got a bit of a break from the stifling humidity during fall camp.

The Crimson Tide practiced for the first time for a specific opponent, Florida State.

“Personally, I’ve been watching them for a while — even since last year when they were playing Ole Miss and I knew we were going to play them next year,” cornerback Anthony Averett said. “I watched that game. I watched a few other games, too.”

It also meant that some Alabama players worked in scout-team jerseys.

They included defensive lineman Labryan Ryan in 9 (Demarcus Christmas), defensive end Phidarian Mathis in 94 (DT Walvenski Aime), defensive tackle Johnny Dwight (Derrick Nnadi) in 91, linebacker Ben Davis in 99 (DE Brian Burns), linebacker Christopher Allen in 16 (Jacob Pugh), linebacker VanDarius Cowan in 9 (DE Josh Sweat) and running back Brian Robinson in 9 (Jacques Patrick). There were numerous players in 3 (RB Cam Akers).

No. 1 Alabama will face No. 3 Florida State in Atlanta on Sept. 2.

Injury update

• Sophomore running back Josh Jacobs (hamstring) was still limited and again wore a support on his right leg. Jacobs and junior running back Bo Scarbrough (ill) both missed Alabama’s final scrimmage last Saturday.

• Junior Christian Miller led the outside linebackers through individual drills, after appearing to ease back into practice Wednesday. He was also wearing a support, on his left hamstring.

• No one wore a black no-contact jersey outside of the quarterbacks during the observation period.

What we saw

• Sophomore Matt Womack is still going through individual drills at right tackle, with true freshman Jedrick Wills working behind him and Alex Leatherwood at left tackle. “He’s young, he’s a great athlete, he’s a good freshman,” linebacker Anfernee Jennings said about Wills. “He came in and he stayed on his Ps and Qs, he’s learning the offense, and you can tell he’s getting better every day.”

• While there hasn’t been any movement on the first-team offensive line, there has been with the second-team. On Thursday, Deonte Brown was working in the back of the unit after having previously been at left guard this week. Junior Dallas Warmack was with the second team at left guard. Senior JC Hassenauer has been at right guard after spending most of fall camp at center, with Brandon Kennedy lining up in the middle.

• Junior running Damien Harris led the running backs through drills.

Of note …

• Nick Saban will address reporters after practice.

• Conditions were 86 degrees with 40 percent humidity and a dew point of 59. The heat index was 87 after reaching 100 almost daily the previous couple of weeks.

• Alabama will practice Friday and Saturday afternoon. With Alabama not playing this weekend the Crimson Tide players will have a chance to watch some games on television and maybe the Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweatherfight. Tight end Miller Forristall told reporters during an interview session earlier in the day which of his teammates gets the most animated: “You guys need to watch Richie Petitbon watch a sporting event. He’s just an animated guy. He just gets into a lot. It’s funny to see his reactions.”
