TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — With the University of Alabama football team beginning its first game-week preparations of the 2017 season, Nick Saban released the initial depth chart on Monday.
For the first time in four years, there wasn’t an “or” listed after the first name at the quarterback position, as sophomore Jalen Hurts is entrenched at the position. On the Monday before the Southern California game in 2016, the first line read Cooper Bateman or Blake Barnett or Hurts.
Barnett ended up starting, and Hurts lost a fumble on his first snap at the collegiate level. He bounced back, though, and threw two touchdown passes and ran in two more scores as Alabama won the neutral-site game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, 52-6.
No. 1 Alabama will face No. 3 Florida State on Saturday at new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (8 p.m. ET, ABC).
