Letters from camp

Alabama’s fall practice continues without a clear transition to game prep for the season opener against Florida State on Sept. 2 — though film study has begun. As Ben Jones of The Tuscaloosa News noted, Bo Scarbrough returned to practice, while Josh Jacobs remains out. Matt Womack practiced at right tackle, despite persistent reports that the offensive line is not quite set.

11 days to kickoff

Roll Bama Roll has been running an excellent look at the history of Alabama football while counting down to kickoff. On Tuesday, it outdid itself, with this excellent piece by Erik Evans on Alabama’s 11th national championship and role as one of a few dependable constants in a world torn by upheaval, at home and abroad. Hmm.

The blitz

Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt loves to bring the blitz — much more so than his predecessor, Kirby Smart. With the all-time great defensive lines, coupled with dominant middle linebackers, that’s been easy to do. But overlooked is his tendency to bring disguised defensive back blitzes, including a blitz from the nickel defensive back that is one of the most subtilely disruptive calls I’ve seen. Linebacker Rashaan Evans said that aggression is fundamental to Alabama’s identity.

Built by Bama

• Justin Thomas has been on everybody’s list to break through as a major champion for two seasons now. For his high school teammates, their expectations date back much longer.

In the majors …

  • Tommy Hunter pitched one inning and gave up one run off a deep shot as the Rays beat the Blue Jays, 6-5.

Around the Capstone

The women’s basketball team released its SEC schedule for the 2017-18 season, including a homestand highlighted by a matchup against defending champion South Carolina and a road trip to Mississippi State, the national runner-up last season. The schedule is one of the most evenly distributed I’ve ever seen, with no more than two consecutive games home or away.
