Alabama football: Kirby Hocutt says there is ‘very little separation’ between Alabama and Ohio State

Alabama football

Alabama football drives the conversation here at the Rammer JammerSECCountry’s daily Alabama athletics recap, but we’ll cover news for every facet of the Crimson Tide. Every morning, we’ll be here for the latest on Alabama football, basketball and every sport on campus.

Very little separation

Alabama’s season is currently up in the air. After coming in at No. 5 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, the team will need either No. 4 Wisconsin or No. 3 Oklahoma to lose on Saturday. An Oklahoma loss would certainly put Alabama in the playoff.

A loss by Wisconsin to No. 8 Ohio State does not guarantee a place in the playoffs for Alabama, however. The Buckeyes have two losses, with one of those being a 31-point beatdown at the hands of Iowa. Still, Ohio State has three wins over top 15 teams. After announcing the rankings, CFP committee chairman Kirby Hocutt did not give Alabama much hope if Ohio State does win. He said there is “very little separation” between the two teams right now. An Ohio State win would certainly give the selection committee a headache.

In other headlines …

  • Radio host Dan Patrick put Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin on the spot by asking him if Alabama coach Nick Saban misses him.
  • Alabama is still favored to win the national championship, according to one big betting service.

Award season

As the season winds down, awards start to pile up for players from all over the country. It’s a good problem to have for some players. Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is one of those players. Fitzpatrick was named one of four finalists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, given to a player that represents the qualities of Hall of Fame member Ronnie Lott. Former defensive end Jonathan Allen (2016) and former linebacker DeMeco Ryans (2005) are the only two players in Alabama history to become finalists for the award. The winner will be announced on Dec. 10 on CBS Sports Network at 7:30 p.m. CT.

Joining Fitzpatrick in the awards race was a surprising name. Redshirt junior running back Ronnie Clark was named a finalist for the Capital One Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award. Clark has had a tough home life growing up and went through two brutal injuries while at Alabama.

Around the Capstone

  • Alabama basketball defeated Louisiana Tech, 77-74, behind 22 points from guards Dazon Ingram and Collin Sexton.
