Alabama football-Crimson Tide-Josh Jacobs

Alabama football drives the conversation here at the Rammer JammerSEC Country’s daily Alabama athletics recap, but we’ll cover news for every facet of the Crimson Tide. Every morning, we’ll be here for the latest on Alabama football, basketball and every sport on campus.

Preparation begins

One day after classes began on Alabama’s campus, the Crimson Tide began game preparation for their season opener against Florida State, possibly the biggest opener in college football history. Of note, mountainous defensive lineman LaBryan Ray played the role of former 4-star recruit Demarcus Christmas. Josh Jacobs was still limited in practice, a fact that opens the door for the freshman running backs. One of those backs, Brian Robinson, practiced as FSU junior running back Jacques Patrick.

Buckle up

The Alabama basketball team revealed its 2017-18 SEC schedule on Thursday. The schedule doesn’t break easily for Alabama, with road only engagements with Georgia, Vanderbilt, Florida and Ole Miss. The Crimson Tide will open and close the SEC slate with Texas A&M — home first. The team’s first game is Nov. 10, when it takes on Memphis in Annapolis, Md.

• Justin Thomas posted a 2-under-par 68 and is tied for 12th place after the first day of The Northern Trust, the opening event of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Fellow former Alabama man Bud Cauley is tied for 80th after a 2-over-par day, but Cauley did get one win against Thomas with a brutal assault on the PGA Champion’s receding hairline.

Around the Capstone

The volleyball team will open its season on the road at the Mortar Board Premier in West Lafayette, Ind., hosted by Purdue. Alabama plays Cleveland State and Oral Roberts on Friday before closing the weekend against No. 25 Purdue on Saturday.

The other football

The Alabama soccer team’s unbeaten streak came to an end with a 2-1 overtime loss to South Florida at home on Thursday night. Alabama dominated the match, posting 20 shots to USF’s 7 but lost when a counterattack drew goalkeeper Kat Stratton from her line, leaving an open net for USF’s Grace Adams.
