Clemson and Miami will meet in the ACC championship in what figures to be one of the biggest college football games of the season on Saturday, December 2, 2017.
While the Tigers are searching for their third straight ACC title and fourth in the last seven years, in many ways, Miami is just happy to be there. For the first time since the Hurricanes joined the conference in 2004, Miami will play in the ACC championship.
But one is going to be hard pressed to get any Hurricanes players or coaches to say they are just happy to be in Charlotte on Saturday. Not only will this matchup decide the ACC conference, but it’s going to basically work as a play-in game to the College Football Playoff. The winner will earn a bid into the 2017 playoffs.

Miami was one victory away against a Pitt team that failed to make a bowl game this season from taking the longest winning streak in the country into this matchup. But instead, the Hurricanes lost their perfect season and must now win the ACC Championship to remain alive in the race for the College Football Playoffs.
Perhaps the loss will work as a wakeup call. Miami has trailed at halftime in five games this season, but last Friday was the first time the Hurricanes failed to rally in the second half and win. Against the defending national champions, Miami cannot afford to come out flat in the first 30 minutes.
That’s because the Clemson comes into this matchup as one of the hotter teams in the nation. The Tigers have won 5 straight since their slip up against Syracuse back in the middle of October, and this past weekend, Clemson knocked off rival South Carolina, 34-10.
The Tigers have several new key players that weren’t starters on their championship team last season, but Clemson still enters this matchup with more big-game experience. Clemson is 6-1 against Top 10 opponents since the start of the 2015 season. However, the Tigers have yet to be matched up against another team ranked in the top 10 this year (at least at the time).
That experience could bode well for the Tigers against a Hurricanes defense that wants to take the ball away. Miami’s turnover chain has taken the country by storm this fall, and it’s been used as a motivator for all the defensive players this year. The Hurricanes have recorded 29 takeaways and lead the nation, forcing an average of 2.63 turnovers per game.
Behind the best turnover rate and turnover margin in the country, Miami posted the third-best scoring defense in the ACC. However, opponents were able to move the ball against the Hurricanes, as they finished 7th in the ACC in yards allowed. The key to the game for Clemson’s offense is avoiding any costly turnovers.
The Tigers forced nearly half as many turnovers, but most fans would probably still argue their unit was more dominant than the Hurricanes. Clemson ended the regular season in the top six in points allowed, total defense and sacks.
Being in opposite divisions, these two schools have only faced 10 times in their histories with the first matchup dating back to 1945. Miami leads the series, 6-4, but Clemson has won 3 of the last 5 games.
All of those 5 games were close except the most recent meeting between the two programs in 2015. That year, the Tigers shutout the Hurricanes, 58-0, in Miami. That embarrassment helped eventually lead to the hiring of current Hurricanes coach Mark Richt.
