2017 SEC Country Power Poll: Where Vanderbilt is ranked (Week 1)

For the first time since 2011, the Vanderbilt Commodores have opened the football season with their heads held high.

Vandy took a ride down Interstate 24 to Murfreesboro on Saturday and convincingly beat neighboring Middle Tennessee, 28-6. While Vanderbilt’s victory was emphatic, it’s going to take more than a win over a Conference USA opponent to earn equity with our SEC Country Power Poll voters.

The Commodores check in at No. 13 in our first ranking of the season, two spots behind Texas A&M, which blew a 34-point lead and lost at UCLA, and one behind Ole Miss, which is playing under an interim coach.

The only team looking up at Vandy in the poll is Missouri, which allowed a gaudy 6.6 yards per play against FCS member Missouri State in a 72-43 win.

All that said, the Commodores should feel good about themselves after providing coach Derek Mason with his first 1-0 start. Kyle Shurmur passed for 296 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Ralph Webb rushed for 49 hard-fought yards and a touchdown.

“It was really important because for us it’s something we hadn’t done here in my tenure, so we got it done tonight,” Mason said after the game. “So now we move on.”

Said Shurmur, “It was very encouraging for the rest of the year. I don’t think we’re satisfied where we’re at, but it’s definitely a good start.”

Vanderbilt hosts Alabama A&M on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. Alabama A&M lost its season opener 38-7 at Alabama-Birmingham. Vanderbilt will face two stern tests after opposing Alabama A&M. Fortunately for the Commodores, both games will be in Nashville. No. 19 Kansas State comes to town Sept. 16, and No. 1 Alabama rolls into Vanderbilt Stadium on Sept. 23.

Check back each Sunday night to see where Vanderbilt sits in the latest SEC Country Power Poll.
