Coming off its 35-28 Week 1 win against North Carolina State on Saturday, South Carolina landed in the No. 5 spot in the first edition of the 2017 SEC Country Power Poll released Tuesday.
The poll, which consists of 26 voters, unanimously placed Alabama in the No. 1 spot, where the Crimson Tide remained all last season.
Here’s how South Carolina reporter Hale McGranahan voted after Week 1:
The only team in the SEC to beat an actual College Football Playoff contender last weekend. The Tide also knocked out Florida State’s starting quarterback, which is a nice little solid for the team they’ve faced in the last two national title games.
The Gus Bus is back on track with a new offensive coordinator and one guy playing quarterback. The Tigers will have a true test this week at Clemson.
This is where things start to get murky in the league’s hierarchy. Eddie O and the boys beat up on the Mormons in their ‘neutral site’ game in New Orleans.
For about three quarters on Monday night in Atlanta, it looked like Butch Jones would end up in that trash can. Nice comeback win against the nerds from Georgia Tech. Not so nice giving up 500-plus yards on the ground.
5. South Carolina
Seriously, did any non-South Carolina fans think the Gamecocks would beat the Wolfpack? Probably not. This is Will Muschamp’s second-best win as Gamecocks coach, trailing only the victory against Tennessee last season.
Jake Fromm > Jake Eason … just ask Dawgs fans.
Is freshman Chase Hayden the next great Arkansas running back? He certainly looked like it against Florida A&M.
A 7-point win against Southern Miss? Yikes. Well, the ‘Cats did lose to the Golden Eagles at home last season.
A basketball game broke out against Missouri State. The Tigers will play lots of basketball games this football season.
10. Mississippi State
Nick Fitzgerald might be the best quarterback in the league. Just don’t tell South Carolina fans.
11. Ole Miss
Hugh Freeze is still employed, right?
The Commodores beat Middle Tennessee, which is good.
13. Texas A&M
It’s like Kevin Sumlin is trying to speed up this whole mid-season firing thing.
Jim Harbaugh is your daddy, coach Mac.
