2017 SEC Country Power Poll: Where LSU is ranked (Week 1)

LSU checks at the No. 3 spot in the first SEC Country Power Poll of the 2017 season. The Tigers opened the season with a defensive domination of Brigham Young, shutting out the Cougars 27-0 in the Advocare Texas Kickoff at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The Tigers did not allow the Cougars to cross the 50-yard line in the stifling win. BYU finished with minus-5 rushing yards, marking the lowest single-game total against LSU since 1982. The Tigers limited BYU to 97 yards of total offense, which ranked fifth in the country in Week 1.

It wasn’t just the defense that got the job done. With 42 minutes time of possession, LSU is tops in the country at holding the ball. Not even successful triple-option offenses such as Georgia Tech and Navy possessed the ball longer in their opening games.

“We’re coming off a good team win against BYU,” said LSU coach Ed Orgeron. “We were very pleased with our preparation. A very focused group all week. You could just tell all week we were ready to play.”

The Tigers dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage against BYU, a program that prides itself on its own physicality in the trenches. Underscoring that point, junior left guard Garrett Brumfield was named the SEC offensive lineman of the week in his first career start.

“I’ve got to thank [strength and conditioning coach] Tommy Moffitt for the great job he did with our guys over the summer,” Orgeron said. “We were bigger, faster and stronger because of the job Tommy and his excellent staff did.”

The Tigers face FCS opponent Chattanooga in their home opener at Tiger Stadium in Week 2. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. CT and airs on the SEC Network alternate channel.
