2017 SEC Country Power Poll: Where Kentucky is ranked (Week 2)

Kentucky hasn’t looked particularly sharp through the first two weeks of the 2017 season, but the Wildcats have an all-important 2-0 record on their resume.

Kentucky was on upset watch for at least the first half on Saturday against Eastern Kentucky, but a second-half comeback spurred the Wildcats to a 27-16 win against the Colonels.

The result was far from impressive, but Kentucky held steady in the latest SEC Country Power Poll. The Wildcats checked in at No. 10 in the poll consisting of 27 voters. Kentucky was also No. 10 in the SEC Country Poll last week.

“We can come out and play a little better, execute, but it’s about us, it’s about our discipline, execution, things that we can get fixed,” coach Mark Stoops said Saturday. “We’ll play better. We’re excited about it. The team’s excited about it.”

After starting the season against Southern Miss and Eastern Kentucky, Stoops’ squad faces a tougher schedule starting on Saturday at South Carolina. The Wildcats and Gamecocks face off at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C.

South Carolina is also off to a 2-0 start. The Gamecocks are No. 5 in the SEC Country Power Poll after a 31-13 win last Saturday at Missouri. It’ll be Kentucky’s first SEC matchup of the season.

Kentucky holds a three-game winning streak against South Carolina. The Cats won 45-38 in 2014, 26-22 in Columbia in 2015 and 17-10 last season in Lexington. Although Kentucky won its last game in Columbia, that was the only time Kentucky came away from South Carolina with a win since 1999.

“It feels really good to be 2-0,” Stoops said after beating Eastern Kentucky. “I can’t wait to get back to practice and look really forward to the challenge of going to South Carolina this week.”
