Kentucky went on the road in Week 1 and picked up a 24-17 win against Southern Miss. Not all were pleased with the result, but Wildcats coach Mark Stoops called it a “thing of beauty.”
SEC Country’s Power Poll, consisting of 26 voters, placed Kentucky at No. 10 in this season’s inaugural edition.
The Wildcats didn’t wow in their performance Saturday, but they notched the all-important first win — something Kentucky failed to do against Southern Miss last season.
“People want to talk about, ‘Well, it was ugly.’ I couldn’t care less if you want to talk about an ugly win,” Stoops said on his radio show Monday night. “A win is a win. We’ve done enough losing for a long time that none of us like, and I certainly don’t like it.”
Alabama, to no surprise, took over the top spot in the SEC Country Power Poll. It’s a place the Crimson Tide held throughout last season.
Kentucky hosts Eastern Kentucky at noon ET Saturday at Kroger Field. The Wildcats will get an opportunity to fine-tune their offense against an FCS squad before SEC play begins in two weeks. Kentucky opens its conference slate in Week 3 against South Carolina, the No. 5 team in the SEC Country Power Poll.
Eastern Kentucky fell to Western Kentucky 31-17 in its season opener, but Stoops came away impressed with the Colonels.
“We’re going to have to play much better,” he said on Monday.
Saturday will mark Kentucky’s first home game since Commonwealth Stadium was renamed Kroger Field. More than 10,000 tickets are available for the game, according to a UK Athletics spokesperson.
Stoops, while addressing any criticism, called for fan support Monday night on his radio show.
“Nobody wants to improve in all areas of the program more than I do,” Stoops said. “And our players work extremely hard in all facets to be the best we can and deliver a winning program … They want to play good for the BBN.”
