Kentucky’s regular season was capped by a 44-17 loss to Louisville on Saturday at Kroger Field. The Wildcats lost four of their last six games to close the season.
“We did not play very good, we did not coach very good, and we certainly did not play with the discipline and the character that this team has,” Mark Stoops said after the game. “That’s not acceptable.”
Kentucky checked in at No. 9 in the latest edition of the SEC Country Power Poll, as compiled by 21 voters. The Cats’ loss to the Cardinals didn’t affect UK’s standing in the poll. Kentucky was ranked No. 9 last week and had spent three consecutive weeks at No. 8 before that.
Kentucky finished the season 7-5 and 4-4 in the SEC for the second season in a row. The Wildcats seem destined for either the Music City Bowl or Liberty Bowl. The postseason destination officially will be announced Sunday. Kentucky is going bowling in back-to-back seasons after missing the postseason from 2011-15.
But for a season that started with such optimism, Saturday’s blowout loss to rival Louisville surely came as a disappointment to the fan base. It came on senior day to make matters worse.
“I’m disappointed I let some people down, and we didn’t play the way we had hoped,” Stoops said. “But I promise you, we’ll get right back at it, and the players need a little bit of time to get away and decompress and heal up, and get away from football for a week or however many days, and then get back at it.”
