GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Gators did not get off to the strong start they and coach Jim McElwain were looking for.
The Gators dropped their marquee season opener against Michigan, 33-17, on Saturday in Arlington, Texas, adding an early speed bump in McElwain’s third season at the helm of the program. The loss dropped the Gators five spots to No. 22 in The Associated Press poll released Tuesday.
“All phases need to continue to get better, and yet there were some really good performances by some guys,” McElwain said on Monday. “As a whole the team fought all the way through. Disappointed with the outcome, and yet, you learn from the outcome and keep moving forward.”
The loss also put Florida in the middle of the pack in the first edition of the 2017 SEC Country Power Poll, also released Tuesday. The Gators open the season at No. 8, just behind Arkansas and just ahead of Mississippi State. Florida was the fourth-highest ranked team among the East. Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee checked in at Nos. 4, 5 and 6, respectively.
Florida struggled on the offensive side of the ball, gaining just 192 yards against the Wolverines. The Gators went 2 for 12 on third down, had just 10 plays in Michigan’s territory and was just one of seven teams in the country without an appearance in the red zone.
The Gators (0-1) are also still looking to solidify their starting quarterback. Redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks, who went 5 of 9 for 75 yards in the opener, will get his second straight start on Saturday in Florida’s home opener against FCS foe Northern Colorado. McElwain said the team will re-evaluate the competition next week.
SEC Country’s Power Poll, consisting of 26 voters, placed Alabama in the No. 1 spot, where the Crimson Tide were all last season.
The Gators’ game against Northern Colorado is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET. It will be televised on the SEC Network.
