Maryland at a glance

Coach: D.J. Durkin
2016 record: 6-7

Terrapins players to watch

Ty Johnson | Running back

The junior set a Maryland record last season by averaging 9.1 yards per carry as he rushed for 1,004 yards. He was just the ninth player in program history to reach 1,000 yards in a season. Johnson produced 10 plays of 40 yards or more a season ago, giving an offense that finished in the bottom half of the Big Ten its most explosive component.

Jermaine Carter Jr. | Linebacker

Carter led Maryland in tackles the last two seasons as its middle linebacker and should be better this year in a second season under former Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin. Only four players in Maryland history have led the team in tackles three seasons in a row, but Carter is in position to join them. Maryland’s defense isn’t spectacular, but Carter can be disruptive with his speed and quickness. He’s able to get sideline to sideline, so Michigan will have to account for him on every play.

Our take

Durkin only spent one season with the Wolverines, but it was enough to cap off a résumé that earned him his first job as a head coach. Maryland is getting better, but that might not show much this season in a very difficult Big Ten East. This is a possible trap game with Michigan having Wisconsin and Ohio State next up on the schedule, but the Terrapins just don’t have the depth and overall talent to keep up with Michigan, even at home.
