  • Coach: Troy Calhoun
  • 2016 record: 10-3

Air Force players to watch

Arion Worthman | QB

Worthman was 5-0 as a starter in his sophomore season while playing in relief of Nate Romine, who was injured in Air Force’s eighth game of 2016. Worthman took over the Falcons’ triple-option offense and finished 23-for-39 passing for 546 yards and 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Worthman finished third in team rushing (674 yards on 130 carries) and ran for 6 touchdowns.

Worthman and Romine are competing for the starting quarterback job this fall.

Timothy McVey | RB

McVey returns to Air Force’s roster as its most versatile offensive player, accounting for 1,348 all-purpose yards last season. McVey finished second in team rushing with 83 carries for 708 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was second in team receiving with 8 catches for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns, and had 447 yards in kickoff returns.

Our take

Air Force’s triple-option offense is predicated on misdirection, and will give the Wolverines their biggest test in the nonconference schedule. Wolverines defensive coordinator Don Brown proclaimed earlier this year that he was watching film on the Falcons as far back as spring. Michigan faces Air Force in its final nonconference game, which will also reveal how conditioned the Wolverines are and how quickly they can respond to a unique offense.

Prediction

Michigan 42, Air Force 24
