After more than a year of dating, British royal family officials announced the engagement of Prince Harry of Wales and American actress Meghan Markle on Monday.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson tweeted a statement on behalf of The Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, shortly after the big announcement.

“We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together,” the statement read.

But talks of whether or not the Queen will actually attend the royal wedding next spring are sprouting up.

As the British monarch, her highness is also the head of the Church of England, which teaches marriage is for life — and divorce is frowned upon, Business Insider reported.

Markle, a divorcee, was married to Trevor Engelson for two years between 2011-2013.

The Queen has skipped out on a royal wedding in the past due to a past divorce. She chose not to attend her son Prince Charles’ wedding to Camilla Parker-Bowles. Both were divorcees.

"I am not able to go," the Queen told a friend at the time, according to The Telegraph. "I do not feel that my position [as Supreme Governor of the Church] permits it," she reportedly said.

The Queen ended up skipping the marriage ceremony, but attended the reception.
