A man was critically injured Tuesday morning in a fiery three-vehicle crash that shut down I-20 East for more than two hours in DeKalb County.
The crash happened about 4 a.m. west of Evans Mill Road, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported.
The incident started when “the driver of a burgundy Nissan Pathfinder lost control and struck the median wall” on the interstate, DeKalb police Lt. Lonzy Robertson told the Traffic Center.
Shortly after that, a silver Toyota hit the Nissan, rolled over an embankment and caught fire, police said.
The driver of that vehicle was able to get out of his car in stable condition. But he has since been downgraded to critical condition, Robertson said. He was taken to the hospital.
The Nissan was also struck by a tractor-trailer, but there were no other injuries reported, police said.
“We believe the initial accident was sleep related,” Robertson said.
All lanes reopened at the crash site just before 7 a.m.
