September 11, 2018 Stone Mountain: The City of Fayetteville Fire Department sponsored their 4th annual, September 11th ascent of Stone Mountain along and several other firefighters from various departments in the Atlanta metro to honor the fallen on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. The firefighters challenged themselves to a one-mile climb equivalent to 160 flights of stairs to the summit of Stone Mountain to commemorate the 17th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States. Wearing a full firefighting gear, the group honored the sacrifices made by 343 firefighters and first responders who lost their lives on 9/11 when hijackers took control of four planes, crashing them into New York’s World Trade Center towers; the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia; and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM
