A group of about 70 students planned to discuss LGBTQ issues with lawmakers during the visit, but the students were surprised and disappointed to find out about a statement made by an official.

During the students’ visit, the page program supervisor sent an email to lawmakers that referred to the students as “cross-dressers” when it announced that pages would be allowed to access a separate women’s restroom.

After they found out about the email, Oklahomans for Equality posted a live video to their Facebook page showing the students and leaders marching up to the speaker of the house’s office to discuss the issue, at which point a staff member said the speaker was unavailable.
