SOBERS, Walter C.

Walter C. Sobers of Atlanta passed away on January 5, 2021, at the age of 95. Walter was born in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated as Valedictorian of Ambler High School Class of 1942. He then enlisted in the Army and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II. After the war, Walter obtained his undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College, and subsequently attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his MBA and graduated third in his class.

Walter began his professional career with the DuPont Company in Delaware, where he worked from 1952 until 1964. It is during this time that he met and married the love of his life, Kay Carr, whom he married in 1958 and shared 50 years with until her death in 2008.

Walter and Kay moved to Atlanta in 1964, when Walter became the Chief Financial Officer of Rollins Inc. It is at this time that Walter and Kay adopted their only child, Charles (Chuck) Sobers. In order to spend more time with family, in 1975 Walter left Rollins to become the fiscal coordinator for the State of Georgia where he worked until his retirement in 2000. He proudly followed his son's tennis career, and made it a point to attend each of his tournaments.

Walter was a devoted husband, father and friend who had a dry sense of humor and a keen mind. He made a point to learn something new each day. Walter was a 45-year member of the Druid Hills Kiwanis Club, and a 48-year member of Living Grace Lutheran Church. He was an avid gardener and was a member of both the Georgia Master Gardener Association and the Dekalb Extension Service, as well as a volunteer for the Atlanta Botanical Garden.

Walter was predeceased by his wife, Kay Carr and his sister-in-law Mary Margaret Carr. He is survived by his son Chuck Sobers of Atlanta.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Families First, Living Grace Lutheran Church or Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
