MAYO (HUMPHRIES), Tommie Nelda
Beloved wife, mother, and educator, Tommie Nelda Humphries Mayo, 76, a native of Lawrenceville, GA, and longtime resident of Allentown, PA, passed away on Feb. 19, 2020, in Dacula, GA. Tommie is survived by her husband of 55 years, Ralph E. Mayo of Allentown, PA; sister, Portia Benton of Macon, GA; brother, Paden Humphries of Lawrenceville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Lydia Mayo of Buford, GA; daughter, Jane Mayo of Hermosa Beach, CA; son, Jackson Mayo of Livermore, CA; and grandchildren, Luke Mayo, Aaron Mayo, Grace Hawkins, Hope Hawkins, and Storm Hawkins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas J. Humphries Jr. and Nell P. Humphries; an infant sister; brother, Thomas John Humphries III; and infant granddaughter, Audrey-Jane Mayo. Tommie was born on July 24, 1943, in Lawrenceville, GA, and attended Lawrenceville First Baptist Church. A 1961 graduate of Central Gwinnett High School, Tommie was married to Ralph in 1964. She studied psychology and earned a bachelor's degree from Georgia State University and a master's degree from the University of Bridgeport, CT. Tommie worked as a teacher and college professor, and took a strong personal role in the education of her children. She founded and administered a Montessori school and later homeschooled her son Jackson. She also operated a counseling service. With her active and curious mind, Tommie's interests included cognition, literature, and travel, but her greatest devotion was to her family. Services will be held at Lawrenceville First Baptist Church on Sat., Oct. 2, 2021, with a visitation at 2 PM and a celebration of life at 3 PM. Interment of ashes will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker, GA.
